Content description

This oil painting on canvas shows a family group enjoying a picnic in Epping Forest. Towards the right of the picture a man in a top hat and waistcoat reclines, propped up against the roots of a tree, smoking a long pipe and reading a newspaper. Behind him a cart with an oval label reading 'J CROCKER / 26 / JOHN STREET / PO[PLAR]' can be seen. In front of him two small children and a dog are playing rather roughly. At the centre of the picture an elderly woman is standing holding a kettle. The tea things are on a tray, which has been placed on a large basket covered with a cloth, in front of her. Close to her another, younger, woman is seated, on a rush seated chair, with a baby on her lap. Her bonnet is hanging on the back of her chair and she is admonishing the children. In the foreground a cane-seated armchair is lying on its back, presumably knocked over by the children. To the left of the scene a young couple sit together slightly removed from the rest of the group.
