Label text for the exhibition The English Regional Chair, Geffrye Museum (15 February 2005–7 June 2005):
Windsor side chair
Beech with elm seat, stamped GIBBONS on rear edge of seat.
Refers to C. Gibbons, fl.1880–1900, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
This is an example of a High Wycombe chair from the late-19th century, when the town was producing around 5,000 Windsor chairs per day. These popular everyday chairs were distributed across the UK and abroad. The making of Windsor chairs was increasingly mechanised during the 20th century. The range of different types of Windsor was impressive, from simple ‘kitchen’ chairs to elaborate high-backed rockers.
Cotton Collection (tv103).
Windsor chairs stacked on a cart outside the High Wycombe firm of C. Gibbons, late-19th century. (Wycombe Museum).
