Physical description
Mahogany and inlaid armchair with a vertically railed rectangular back with a segmental inlaid tablet in the top rail between down-curved arms on vase turned supports. The seat has a panel of blue silk damask edged with gimp, in a mahogany frame. The chair sits on ring-turned tapered and splayed legs joined by turned stretchers. There is inlaid stringing, probably ivorene, with some marquetry decoration in the form of an urn with scrolling leaves and berries in the tablet of the top rail in the tablet of the top rail.
The top rail is morticed or dowelled onto the rear posts. The bottom rail is probably tenoned into the rear posts. The vertical splats are tenoned at the top and bottom. The arms are screwed and plugged to the rear posts and are possibly dowelled onto the front supports. The supports are screwed and plugged into the side of the seat. The seat frame is probably tenoned. It is notched to the rear posts with a screwed plug. The four legs are dowelled up to the seat frame. All the stretchers are dowelled. The upholstery appears to be original with evidence of a later cover tacked over it. The upholstery is on a foundation of deal boards which are supported on slips screwed to the insides of the frame rails. The chair probably originally had a bottom cloth.
The chair is stamped 'AW' on the underside of the rear rail. The chair has been finished with grain filler and varnish. The marquetry is intact apart from a filled loss to the top centre of the marquetry tablet. There are additional tacks in the gimp trapping with remains of a later top cover.
