Clock, 1660s
Brass with lead weight
Clocks such as this would have been hung quite high up on the wall. The chain would be pulled up to raise the weight, which then drove the mechanism. This clock would have run for about 30 hours, before the weight needed to be raised again. The dial is inscribed with the maker’s name, Robert Robinson, whose workshop was at Lothbury to the east of St Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London.
