Stuffed birds
Along with floral carpets and curtains, nature was bought directly into mid-nineteenth-century homes with displays of plant and animal specimens. Millions of hummingbird skins were exported to Europe from Central and South America and the tiny, colourful bodies were stuffed to make a splash of colour as drawing room ornaments.
