Content description

This hand-coloured etching depicts a man and a woman standing in front of a fireplace. On top of the mantelpiece there is a Buddha statue and a glass vase. There is a hearth rug in front of the fireplace and a curved fender in front of the grate which contains a lit fire, smoke spews into the room from the chimney. There is a fitted carpet on the floor and a window in the background with a bell pull to the left hand side of it. There is a speech bubble above the woman which reads, 'I believe Doctor you are little / better than a great Irish imposter - to take / two Guineas for curing my Chimney,/ and the moment I put a bit of fire in / the grate - I am half suffocated!!'. The man stood opposite her has a speech bubble above him, who in reply says, 'Dont put yourself in such a passion my dear Crater I'll make / it appear as plain as the nose in your face - all you talk'd to me / was about smoke you never once mention'd the fire - / depend upon it if you put no fire in the grate the / Devil a bit of smoke will come from the / Chimney!!'
