Physical description

Painting in oil on canvas showing a domestic interior. Seated in the centre of the painting are two women, one of whom is holding a baby. The interior is furnished in an eclectic mix of styles typical of the period, with furniture including a Queen Anne-style cabinet and a table with bobbin-turned legs. On the table is a fringed and embroidered tablecloth, and there is a highly pattened carpet. The painting depicts the play of light filtered by the Venetian blind and lace curtains, on the room, revealing the reflective pattern of the wallpaper and the gleaming qualities of the gilded and polished furniture. The painting bears a signature, below the table on the right, of TB Kennington which is not genuine. The painting may have been cut down. It is framed in a modern gilt frame in the style of Louis XIV.

A domestic interior with two women dressed in mourning
By A.M. Rossi
Oil on canvas, about 1885

The black clothing worn by the women and the dark veil over the bust on the table to the right indicate that this is a scene of mourning, presumably for the husband of one of the women and father of the child.

Before the painting was purchased by the museum it was attributed to Thomas Benjamin Kennington, but curators discovered that his signature was a forgery. They noticed a number of elements in the painting, including the tablecloth and the small table with the metal plant holder, which are strikingly similar to those in paintings by Alexander Rossi. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Rossi’s signature was hidden underneath the frame.
