Physical description

Cotton furnishing fabric, manufactured by David Whitehead Ltd, and distributed by Caton Furnishing Fabrics. The fabric has a red ground with intersecting horizontal and vertical black lines to create a square grid pattern. Inside each alternate square is a small white dot. The fabric is in a rough L-shape where it has been cut for use in upholstery. There is a paper label attached to the fabric with string and secured by a metal fastener. The label is rectangular with the corners cut off at the top left and top right edges. The label has a cream ground with a grey border, with printed text in dark pink. On one side is printed in dark pink, "A DAVID / WHITEHEAD / FABRIC / Distributed by / CATON / FABRICS / REGD". On reverse of label written in blue ink "ref185 39990 / Boyd." Inscription printed in dark pink "CATON / FABRICS / REGD" The following inscription is printed in dark pink and also written in pencil "Quality FB27 / Shade I / Piece No 37599 / Yards 1ΒΌ / Ref. J105"
