Hand-coloured etching on paper, surrounded with a yellow border in which the title, 'Arithmetic plate 8: Practice' as well as the plate number and publication line are printed.
This etching depicts a young man practicing fencing, he is at full lunge aiming at a practice target hung on the door, by piercing the target he has struck a man servant who is coming through the door causing him to drop the tea service he is carrying. An open book, with pictures of fencing moves lies on the floor, a glove lies to the left of the book. Another young man is in the room seated at a table playing the flute, there is some sheet music on top of the table. On the back wall are a series of pictures which show sporting and animal scenes. There is a fitted floral carpet on the floor and a window with a draped curtain.
