Physical description

Oil painting on canvas, with another unfinished painting of a similar vase of flowers in portrait form on the reverse side. There is also a handwritten inscription, in pencil, on the back of the stretcher which is difficult to make out but appears to say 'Larine / (Mum Goffye)' or possibly 'J Tanne Mum Godfrey'. There are a number of paper and card labels glued and tied to the back of the frame and the stretcher. The canvas is in a wooden frame painted gold, with black and rust brown specks. The gesso shows through in places, giving it a distressed look. It has a border of husks around the inner edge and moulded acanthus leaves in the corners.

Content description

This oil painting on canvas represents a vase of flowers, with part of an interior in the background. The flowers are in an oriental ceramic bowl, which is decorated with stylised flowers in red and blue, with green foliage, on a white ground. This holds a large quantity of flowers, of various kinds, including fuchsias, irises, Japanese anemones and roses, in pinks, whites, blues and yellows. The vase of flowers sits on a wide window ledge and a light coloured curtain can be seen on the right hand side of the painting. A tiny chink of garden is just visible through the window at the bottom right of the canvas. The painting is signed 'R. Latter.' in the bottom left hand corner.
