Watercolour on paper, glazed and framed in an oil glazed picture frame, which has been cut down. It is inscribed on the reverse side 'Windermere/Annie Scott [presumably the sitter] - Gadringal [?] - EK.'
An old lady (presumably Annie Scott) is reclining on a Regency couch in the bottom right corner. In the foreground is shown the top of a circular table with a box, sewing (?) bag and pair of scissors. Behind this is a Regency table piled with books, and a bag. Above the table are some hanging shelves on which are two boxes and some vases. The tassle of the sun blind hangs down in front of the window, through which can be seen the roof of a cottage.

View of a domestic interior in Windermere, Cumbria showing a woman reclining on a sofa
By Emma Kinder
Watercolour on paper, about 1850
This cosy room in a Lake District home probably belonged to the elderly woman shown resting on the sofa, her face appears in the bottom right of the picture. The room is filled with personal mementos, paintings and objects which reveal how time was spent. The sewing kit and inkwell tell us that practical tasks were completed here. Whilst the books and comfortable furnishings show that it was also a space for leisure and relaxing.
