This handknotted wool rug with a geometric pattern in soft colours was retailed by Waring and Gillow Ltd from 1929. Waring and Gillow Ltd was one of London's specialist furnishing firms and was based in Oxford Street. They were kept busy with decorating contracts for the great luxury hotels, gentleman's clubs, department stores and the massive blocks of mansion flats going up in Kensington. Their patrons demanded period furniture, plenty of panelling on the walls, elaborate plasterwork ceilings and thick carpets. In 1929 the firm decided to appoint modernist designers, Serge Chermayeff, and Paul Follot, to redisplay their furnishing showrooms to attract new customers to buy their products. The rug was included in the redisplay, its design in keeping with the firm's new modern image.

Hand-knotted wool
Retailed by Waring & Gillow Ltd., England, about 1929
In 1929 rugs of this design featured in a high-profile display of new French furniture at the London showrooms of Waring & Gillow. The bold geometric design is influenced by African textiles, giving it a strong connection to Art Deco. However, it was selected for the display by the architect and designer Serge Chermayeff, who went on to become one of Britain’s most influential Modernists.
