Physical description

This small abstract painting is in oil on board. The picture consists of vertical bands of hot, vibrant colour, including white, orange and terracotta. The paint is laid on thickly. There is a narrow gilded and painted inner frame around the painting itself, which is attached to a wide, hessian covered outer frame.

The back of the painting itself is signed and dated 'Joe Tilson / 1959' in pencil and marked with a large arrow, pointing upwards, next to the word 'TOP'. The back of the frame is inscribed in pencil, 'JOE TILSON / 6" x 5" / "SUMMER, 1959, 21,"' between two vertical lines. Next to this an upwards pointing arrow has been drawn and labelled with the word 'TOP'.
