Physical description

Hexagonal occasional table made from stained mahogany, with a moulded top. The table stands on six turned legs, joined by ball and rod lattices. Each of the side panels has a keyhole or mihrab shaped arch and ball-and-rod base stretchers. The arches are formed of bent and joined scrolling turned wood, below which are two rails linked by a spindle turning with spherical bosses at the intersections. Above the arches, similar turning and bosses infill up to a top rail.

The top is constructed from one piece of board, and the legs are housed into recesses in the top and screwed. The horizontal rails between the legs are screwed with dome-headed screws, and the rails are set alternately higher and lower to admit the screws. The ends of the lattice are dowelled into the frame at all points, and the curved mihrab is constructed in sections joined by floating tenons. Some of the joints may be concealed by brass. The mihrabs are fixed to the legs by domed, brass screws. The base stretchers are fixed in pairs, upper and lower to allow for the screw heads. The varnish has considerably degraded over all the exposed areas of the frame, while remaining heavily patinated in the hollows and crevices. There is a break to one of the scrolls of the mihrabs and many of the joints in the mihrabs are open or insecure.

Table

This small table was probably made in England, but its design influences are those of the Islamic world. The hexagonal top suggests Turkish origins; the lattice panels resemble mashrabiyya, grid-like window screens used across the Middle East; and the scrolling shapes suggest the mihrab, an arch motif often used in Islamic design.
