Label
Label text for ‘Keeping House’ case, Information Bay 1, Geffrye Museum, 2010:
Watering pot, late sixteenth century
Earthenware
Until the eighteenth century carpets were expensive commodities and most people used them on tables rather than floors. Plaited rush matting was widespread as a floor covering, but was prone to dustiness. Watering pots such as this one were used to dampen the matting and keep dust levels down.
