Brief description

Kitchen side chair with sawn back uprights and a flattened cross-rail in the back. This chair has a rush seat and is made of alder. It bears the maker's stamp of C. Leicester who was active in Macclesfield, Cheshire between 1816 and 1860.

Kitchen side chair with rush seat & with a single turned & flattened back cross rail below a shaped top rail in the back
decoratively turned front stretcher, type E (fig NW384); quarter round top to front legs; rush seat edges convex, a feature of Leicester family workshop
Chair back: curved sawn back posts, connected by a plain broad top rail above & turned cross rail with central flattened section

Front legs: quarter round top; flattened ball & ring turning below; turned leg; lower 2 ring turning with vase shaped feet
Back legs: plain sawn & curved
Feet: front: 2 ring turning & vase shaped, back: continuous with leg
Stretcher detail: box form, type BBi; double plain turned side stretchers
Front stretcher: decoratively turned stretcher, type E (fig NW384)
Back stretcher: single plain turned stretcher
