Label

Label text for the exhibition The English Regional Chair, Geffrye Museum (15 February 2005–7 June 2005):
Armchair, scrolled arms
Concave hollow seat, elm, stamped on underside of rear seat stretcher J.MEEK. Probably refers to H.J.Meek, chairmaker, Norwich, fl.1883.
Very few East Anglian chairs were stamped with the maker’s name, and this is one of only two which have been discovered so far. Scrolled arms and turned legs were popular forms for fashionable chairs in the early-19th century. However the rounded shape of the curved top rail is typical of the second half of the century. A similar chair can be seen in the photograph showing the aftermath of a flood at Stiffkey, Norfolk (see wall display).
