Porcelain ornaments, about 1782
Porcelain, Derby factory

Classical style is clearly expressed in this matching set of two jugs and a vase. The shapes follow those of classical urns, while the painted panels depict classical figures and landscapes. Known as a garniture, a set like this would have been displayed on a mantelpiece or side table as a statement of the owner’s taste and refinement.

The vase or urn was one of the most important symbols of antiquity in the eighteenth century. Practical and decorative objects would often imitate antique prototypes at this time. The shape of this vase follows those of classical urns and the painted panels also depict classical figures and landscapes.
