Content description

The woman is wearing a robe of ivory coloured silk, woven with a brocade pattern of large flowers in gold thread, with a quilted petticoat underneath and a black bow on the bodice. She is also wearing a white cap, lace ruffles at her neck and sleeves and a fine muslin apron over the top of her dress. She holds a small round object in her hand, which may be thread for tatting or a pomander. She is seated on a chair with a vase-shaped splat and curved back rail, next to a round tripod table, upon which there are three books. A fireplace, with a landscape painting above, can be seen in the background on the right hand side of the picture. A blue and white porcelain ginger jar has been placed in the fireplace opening. The rest of the room is empty and only sketchily depicted but there is some suggestion of wall panelling with a lighter coloured skirting.

Painting
The painting is a portrait of a woman in her best dress seated in a plain interior. The furniture she is shown with, the India-back chair, just visible behind her right shoulder, and the tripod table, were appropriate furnishings for a ‘polite’ way of living and helped to convey the woman’s status and values.
By Arthur Devis, oil on canvas with gilded frame, c1742
