Caption for Exploring 20th Century London website:
This standard lamp came from a house in Southgate, north London. The house, called 'Oakbeams', was owned by Robert Cole who was a theatre designer and chose furnishings by Gordon Russell Ltd which was one of the most influential furniture design and manufacturing firms of the mid- 20th Century. The base is made from aluminium and the shade from a substance called 'rhodoid'. It would have been considered an example of the best of contemporary design at the time it was made, around 1935. Other pieces of furniture from 'Oakbeams' can be seen on this website (18/1978-2 and 18/1978-3-1).
