Caption for Exploring 20th Century London website:
This table came from a house called 'Oakbeams' in Southgate, north London. This was a large detached house built in the late 1920s in an Arts and Crafts style for a theatrical agent named Robert Cole. In the early 1930s Mr Cole visited the furniture showroom of Gordon Russell Ltd on Wigmore Street and was so impressed that he decided to have the whole of the ground floor of 'Oakbeams' kitted out in Gordon Russell's modern style. He chose this dining table from the luxurious 'Chastleton' range. It is made from rare and expensive wood and is very finely crafted. He also chose a set of dining chairs to go with it, which are available to see on this website (18/1978-3-1) and a standard lamp (18/1978-6).
